Sports Fact of the Day 4/17/2007

4/17/1995:
Playing shortstop for the Yankees in the ninth inning of a spring training game against the Dodgers, Randy Velarde executes baseball's rarest feat-an unassisted triple play. With the runners moving on the pitch, Velarde catches a line drive, touches up at second base and tags the runner coming in from first. It would be just a Grapefruit League footnote except that five years from now, playing second base for Oakland against the Yankees, Velarde will become only the 11th player in history (and third second baseman) to pull off an unassisted triple play in a regulation game.
