Sports Fact of the Day 4/14/2007

4/14/1917:
Knuckleballer Ed Cicotte of the Chicago White Sox throws a no-hit, no-run game, blanking the St. Louis Browns, 11-0, at Sportsman's Park. Cicotte, also a practitioner of the soon-to-be-outlawed "shine ball," walks three, fans five and breezes to his only lifetime no-no. (Ironically, just three weeks from now, he'll be on the losing end when Ernie Koob of the Browns no-hits the White Sox.) Cicotte will win 28 games for Chicago this season, helping the team to their second world championship. In 1921, he'll be banned from the game (with seven of his teammates) for allegedly consorting with gamblers and throwing the 1919 World Series.
