John's Birthday & Friday the 13th
4/13/2003:
Mike Weir, 32, becomes the first Canadian to win a major golf championship, capturing the Masters in a playoff over Len Mattiace. Weir shoots a bogey-free 68 to erase a three-stroke deficit before winning the tourney on theh first hole of sudden death, ironically with a bogey. He joins Bob Charles of New Zealand (1963 British Open) as the only left-handed winners of a major title. Phil Mickelson will join them next year when he, too, wins the Masters.
