Whether or not you watched Veronica Mars while it was on television, you should know that this was one series that was full of surprises and mystery.

One of the many surprises lies in the fact that this was actually a very smart and engaging series.

Veronica Mars is set in the wealthy seaside community of Neptune , CA , where the rich and powerful make the rules. Unfortunately for them, there's Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell), a smart, fearless young apprentice private investigator dedicated to solving the town's toughest mysteries.

The series all started with a premise not unlike a Nancy Drew mystery. Except this series is of course modern, sometimes dark, and sprinkled with the wit and sarcasm of today. Veronica's dad is a county sheriff and her best friend, Lilly is murdered. Her dad accuses Lilly's billionaire father of the murder and loses his job as sheriff. He then opens a detective agency, "Mars Investigations," where Veronica works part time and learns some sleuthing skills. And that's just to get the first season started.

Throughout the first season she is trying to uncover Lilly's murderer and solving small cases along the way. She does this with the help of some high school nerds and a biker gang.

Season two brings in more mysteries to solve including a murder and a bus crash mystery.

But in season three, Veronica goes to college. In season three, hoping to leave the ghosts of Neptune High behind her, Veronica is now a freshman at Hearst College , along with her boyfriend, Logan Echolls, and best friends, Wallace Fennel and Cindy "Mac" Mackenzie. But despite the students' efforts to soak up the college experience in their own way, it quickly becomes obvious that some ghosts are here to stay. This is the season which really ripened for me. There are 3 main mysteries; Veronica attempts to identify the Hearst College rapist, a murder, and well..I'll leave the best one for you.

Add the increasingly dangerous private investigator business ran by Veronica's father, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni), to her spreading reputation around campus as a girl who can fix the unfixable and it becomes clear that Hearst College has never encountered a student like Veronica Mars before. Building on its trademark twists and turns but featuring a new campus, new faces and new surprises, Veronica Mars promises to keep old and new fans alike guessing in its third season.

It seems just when a series gets really good and rolling, the networks cancel. But we have the DVD's. Season 3 has just been released on DVD and you can check it out here. Veronica Mars on DVD

One thing to check out if you get a chance to watch the season 3 dvd is there's an bonus feature of n in-depth interview w/ Creator Rob Thomas discussing a new direction for the series presented to network executives that picks up years later, with Veronica as a rookie FBI agent.

So Veronica could be back.

Pajiba has a fabulous eulogy for Veronica Mars, a show which snuck up into my list of all-time great hour-long dramas. They've got the perfect descriptive praise of the writing:

But the thing that hits me a moment before everything else is always the story itself. There’s a graceful kind of math to well-done structure, when characters are pulled apart or pushed together or sent sailing by each other in the night by the impassive hand of fate.

Dead on. All praise Rob Thomas and his writers.

"Veronica Mars" may live on ... but not on television.

Creator Rob Thomas revealed that the teenaged private eye may continue her adventures on the big screen and in the pages of a comic book, reports the Toronto Star.

"I have some ambition to write a screenplay, see if I can shop that and get it made," says Thomas Monday (June 11) at the Banff World Television Festival. "And I had a meeting with DC Comics last Monday and they want to do [Season 4] as a comic series."

To make the series more appealing to the CW audience, Thomas had proposed to fast-forward Veronica's adventures by a year, which would place her at the FBI Academy. Although the green network didn't bite, this concept seems perfect for the comic book treatment.

But as for the TV show, which ended its third season on the CW on May 22, it won't be back. "It's over for good as a television series," confirms Thomas.

So fans heartened by the "Jericho" nuts campaign can just stop sending Mars Bars to the CW in hopes that the show will be renewed for the fall.

"I just heard about the Mars Bar campaign," says Thomas. "This is a tough thing for me to say because I love those people and they have been so good to me, but it's not going to happen. At the end of the day [CW president] Dawn Ostroff doesn't get to make the final call. Hers is an important voice in the room. But they're the little sister company of CBS. There was a pretty strong feeling that [CBS head] Les Moonves didn't want to do the show."

Thomas previously worked as a writer on "Dawson's Creek" and the short-lived ABC series "Cupid." He will next serve as the show runner on ABC's mid-season series "Miss/Guided," which stars Judy Greer as a high school guidance counselor. He also has high hopes for a pilot idea called "Party Down," in which actor wannabes newly arrived in Hollywood land jobs as caterers.

Exclusive: "Glimmer of Hope" for Veronica Mars

Kristen Bell by Mike Ansell/The CW This is why I always tell you people that it ain't over till it's over: According to my CW moles, bless their hairy little hearts, the odds of Veronica Mars being renewed just went from "so-so" to "pretty good." Suddenly, per my spy, "There's a glimmer of hope." Here's why: • Since Gilmore Girls is packing it in, the network suddenly has an extra hour of prime real estate available. What are they gonna do, renew 7th Heaven again? (That was a joke, CW. Don't get any ideas.) • CW prez Dawn Ostroff is said to have responded very favorably to the trailer that series creator Rob Thomas shot for a potential reworking of the show with VM as an FBI agent (think Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs, only with way better hair and funnier dialogue). What's more, sources whisper to me that on the strength of that presentation, Thomas and Co. have been asked for more deets of the proposed revamp. • Big changes are afoot — starting at the very top. "They've talked about a title change," says my spy. (Hey, if the quality remains the same, they can call it Veronica Mars Presents: The Search for the Next Pussycat Doll for all I — and I suspect all of us V fans — care.) Furthermore, there would likely be a major cast shake-up, with Bell the only guaranteed carryover. So what do you think, people? Isn't VM worth saving, even if it means we'll have to flash-forward through her remaining college years? (There are only so many keggers a girl can go to, anyway.) And what about new titles? Do we really want to leave that up to the suits that eighty-sixed Everwood? Methinks now might be a good time to start offering up suggestions.
