Under 19-year-old Ron Franklin, Spectacular Bid surges to the lead at the head of the stretch and gallops to victory in the 105th running of the Kentucky Derby. General Assembly, a son of Secretariat, comes in second. The Bid will win the Preakness in two weeks at Pimlico, but his Triple Crown hopes will be dashed in the mile-and-a-half Belmont Stakes when Coastal emerges as a surprise winner.
