Sports Fact of the Day 5/1/2007
5/1/1939:
The White Sox beat the Cubs, 4-1, at Comiskey Park in a special benefit game for Pitcher Monty Stratton, who lost his leg in a hunting accident last fall. After winning 15 games in each of the last two seasons, the 6'5" right-hander stumbled in some underbrush and shot himself in the right knee, resulting in immediate amputation. Now a ChiSox pitching coach and outfitted with an artificial limb, he'll be the subject of a Hollywood movie starring Jimmy Stewart.
