Book Rec of the Day 4/5/2007

INVESTIGATIVE NONFICTION

The notorious pirate Captain Kidd was rumored to have buried half of his treasure on a small island off the coast of Nova Scotia. In 1795 on Oak Island, a young man discovered a shaft made of oak logs and containing coconut mats—but no treasure. Still, this strange finding gave others hope, and for two hundred years treasure seekers from madmen to millionaires have flocked to Oak Island in search of glory and riches. This is a seductive story and “a splendid reportorial job” (BusinessWeek).

THE SECRET TREASURE OF OAK ISLAND: THE AMAZING TRUE STORY OF A CENTURIES-OLD TREASURE HUNT, by D’Arcy O’Connor (The Lyons Press, 2004)
