3/3/1985:
Legendary Bill Shoemaker becomes the first jockey to pass $100 million in career earnings by his mounts when he pilots Lord at War to victory in the Santa Anita Handicap. More than 85,000 fans watch Shoe win his 8,446th race, his 11th Santa Anita 'Cap, and capture the $275,000 winner's purse. Lord at War defeats Greinton and the favorite, Gate Dancer, in the prestigious West Coast handicap event. Jockeys usually receive 10% of the purses they earn for the owners of the horses they ride.
