Sports Fact and Book Rec of the Day 9/25/2007

Leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 9-4 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Jeromy Burnitz and Richie Sexson become the first teammates to hit three home runs apiece in the same game. It's the fourth time this year that a Brewer has had a three-homer game. Geoff Jenkins had one on April 28, and Burnitz achieved the same feat on May 10.

The Washington Post says Our Kind is “the book you read along with Updike and Cheever” and The New York Times Book Review calls it “exquisite.” The linked stories are of suburban matrons who came of age in the 1950s and are now without husbands (divorced, in most cases) and children (they’re all grown). How do they spend their days now? Ogling the pool boy, meddling in the realtor’s life, looking up old boyfriends, and finally spreading their wings now that they have nothing left to lose. An uplifting read.
