James Villas is the former food editor of Town & Country, the chichi rag of the society set, so you might expect his essays on food to be, well, snooty. Not so! Here are rhapsodies on peanut butter, meatloaf, Costco, sourdough, and grits, as well as more rarified pleasures too: He bids on Château d’Yquem at a wine auction and investigates the decadent allure of absinthe (known as the green fairy). Life is a banquet for Villas, as you can tell from his exuberant adventures. Pull up a chair!
