Sports Fact and Book Rec of the Day 7/27/2007

7/27/1985:
Steve Cram of Great Britain shaves more than a full second off the world record for the mile when he's clocked at 3:46.31 in Oslo, Norway. The traditionally fast track at Bislett Stadium produces two other world marks today as Said Aouita of Morocco sets a new record in the 5000 meters and local favorite Ingrid Kristiansen of Norway shatters the record in the women's 10,000 meters by more than 14 seconds. Cram's historic effort in the mile betters the previous standard of 3:47.33 set by Sebastian Coe in Brussels in 1981. Coe runs third in this race a very fine 3:49.22.

Straightforward, powerful, and unforgettable.
