Wesley Stace is the real name of the musician John Wesley Harding, known for his wickedly witty lyrics. His debut novel is no less smart than his fans would expect. It’s a juicy period piece about an orphan rescued from a trash heap and raised by a rich man as his son. The twist: the orphan in question is, in fact, a girl. How baby Rose figures out her real identity and dodges the schemes of malicious relatives intent on her fortune is unwound in a lively escapist escapade. The Village Voice raves, “poignant and mordantly funny.”
