New York, NY (AHN) Andrew Lloyd Webber's, "The Phantom of the Opera," has become the longest-running Broadway show in history. The April 4th matinee at The Majestic Theatre, New York, marked its 8,000th performance and made it the highest-grossing entertainment and most financially successful Broadway show of all time.

"The Phantom of the Opera" is taken from Gaston Leroux's French novel about a masked man who terrorizes a Paris Opera House and who falls in love with a naive soprano, Christine, who he takes under his wing and trains to become the star of the opera.

In its 20th year, "The Phantom of the Opera" is directed by Harold Prince. Music is by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and lyrics by Charles Hart.
